a review of: RAHC Guide by noted Author James Kavanaugh Jr.

The RAHC Guide is written by noted Author James Kavanaugh Jr. which you may know from the excellent What’s On Joe Mind podcast.

It’s obvious this work is a labor of love. it covers an era of  figures often looked down upon in a thorough manner. This is a guide for every figure and vehicle released from 1997 to 2007 and details their parts, what the came with, variants, and some trivia information. It isn’t a price guide, but it doesn’t need to be. Despite books like this including price guides, toy prices fluctuate enough that they can only be close to accurate briefly, and with this particular set of toys, sadly most of them are not as desired as the classic 12″ or ARAH figures, or even the more recent 25th to current style figures.

Good news everyone!   The G.I.Joe Contest I originally told you about here, is still on and the deadline has not only been extended, but the prize package has been sweetened ! This bad boy could be yours, for free! Just enter the contest as this is now one of the prize options!

The other prizes are:

The Hard to find Ashiko with Armor Cycle

Hard to find, and often sought after.

Hard to find, and often sought after. I was lucky to get it at that price, but you can get it for a picture of a custom !

And the entire wave of Discount Store figures (First paint schemes)

The 2012 surprise and Hot Joe Item

The 2012 surprise and Hot Joe Item

This black trooper is the hardest to find in the set. this is the only one i have ever seen in the wild.

This black trooper is the hardest to find in the set. this is the only one i have ever seen in the wild.

The New Deadline: April 15th. Yes that’s after Joecon, and possibly more importantly, that’s after the custom class you can find out about here.  This way if your going to con you have an extra chance to work on your custom, possibly with the help form experts. Yes someone going to Con would already have the chance to own a couple of Saw-vipers, but it’s an army builder right! and it will be worth $, not to mention it’s not the only prize that can be chosen from.  Being after con also allows me to get the saw-viper to the winner quickly, and if you hurry, will also allow a customizer more inspiration from seeing the Retaliation movie!

1st place will choose his prize, then 2nd place, and the third man will get the left overs.

The original post (with the rules) follows:

The Theme is Movie Verse 1.5. The idea is simple, with the upcoming retaliation movie there is a lot of hope it will do well, and reflection on what went wrong with Rise of Cobra. To enter the contest you have several options, 1. 1.5 can refer to an improvement on the designs of the original movie or the upcoming retaliation, such as repainting the Joes or Cobras to look more classic but using movie parts, 2. You can make a custom of a character appeared in the original movie but did not get a figure,( like Paris pursuit scarlet) or a character we have seen an image of in the Retaliation trailer or press releases but do not have a figure for (like spec ops or White uniform CC) 3. Finally you can make a figure of a movie character from the first movie, as they might appear in between the movies (Like using a Tatum head, but giving us an urban style Duke, or giving us a movie scarlet head, but in desert fatigues)

The rules:
1. You must be registered here on Toy Nation and have a post count minimum of 25 (which should be easy to do) to win.
2. You may enter as many customs as you like, but each person can only win one prize.(so if you place 1st and 2nd, i’d skip to number 3)
3. All customs will be shown on the forums, and will be open to vote by all members of the forums (invite your friends)
4. The point is to update or be in the movie universe, no 100 % arah updates please.
5. You may post work in progress threads, but if you do elsewhere, please also post them here!

My thoughts on Joe Club’s Iceberg exclusive membership figure.

08_CobraCommanderThe G.I.Joe club has revealed their exclusive Iceberg figure. This is the club incentive figure for next year, and all you have to do is sign up before March 15th and you will get this figure in the mail. You can visit their site here.

I was really looking forward to Iceberg, and i thought he would make a great addition to my G.I.Joe arctic troops.

iceberg-25th-anniversary-gijoe_1361218983It’s been said that the head is not final, and we can only hope.  The lack of detail would instantly stand out when placed with other figures, although the white stand will do that anyways.

The gear looks nice, it comes from the canceled ROC arctic Duke. The torso is from the 25th Snow serpent, arms from 30th airtight the legs came from the 25th spirit. The legs are where these figure becomes a catastrophic failure. He is far too top heavy The tight to the skin pants are clearly not think enough to keep him warm, or to balance off the upper half.  The right upper leg remains warped looking which only adds to my disappointment.

I don’t want it said i’m always down on the club. last year’s footloose and con set looked phenomenal ! I loved the FSS Jinx (as a said in my review here)  but something is off this year, and they are swinging mostly misses.

G.I.Joe con registration experience, I was not thrilled.

5by5nI should begin by saying, this is my opinion. My experience may not be typical, although I am seeing some angry waves in various places in the G.I.Joe fandom.

The club is run by funpublications. I have never been a member of the club until recently. In the past I have not seen enough value in their products to justify the cost, and often the product itself did not interest me as they focused on original o-rings rather than the new sculpt era for a time, and have often made figures i feel that even as a novice customizer I could replicate.  I also knew of many who had bad experiences with the club, and last years credit card security issues, and the extreme delays of the FSS which concerned me.

A few factors lined up this year for it to be my first con. I no longer live in the boonies of Alaska, I can actually drive to this con, I’m not as broke as some of my past years, and Iwas really impressed with last years con set, Footloose. I figured at least it’s a once in a life time opportunity and that I’d probably have no issues, but guess what, I had several problems today as well!Like everyone else, a heads up that the registration was going to go live is a MUST. I didn’t want the golden ticket, but if I had I wouldn’t have been able to get one. i found out out via facebook through What’s on Joe mind’s page, if it hadn’t been for that, i had a busy day planned and likely wouldn’t have even known till an hour ago.

Once I got into register, and used my card it gave me an error, told me i had no items in my cart and to try a different card or to call them. So I tried to call them, both numbers were busy. Fear was setting in. I already had my hotel booked, what if I couldn’t get a set.
There was nothing wrong with my card, I confirmed that, and tried again. The issue? I had to list my current address incorrectly to match the billing address, it wouldn’t let me register unless those two matched. Why on earth does my billing and shipping have to match? I just moved not everything matches yet, and what about people with P.O. boxes? For years I lived in a residence which didn’t even have a mailbox, would I have encountered issues then?
Then I get a call from credit card company, an alert for potential false charges. Who was making these charges? 3 charges from the club! according to the error message i wasn’t being charged! Tonight other people have told me that has been an issue in the past, if so why hasn’t this been fixed? The entire experience wasn’t pleasant, i was no longer excited about going to my first con, I was upset and nervous. I wasn’t thinking about this was my hobby and a means of stress relief, my stomach was turning in knots.

And the figures themselves this year? Are in my opinion are some of the worst figures they have ever put out. Teal? Hit n meh? super hero parts and neon colors? Don’t get me wrong there is a couple I like and will keep (Asp and probably charbroil), the others will probably be spaced out as prizes on the forums. but I hate that i have to buy figures i don’t want to get into the panels.
I’ve always tried to stay neutral on the club issue and I understand that no business is perfect.  But I kept noticing issues that bugged me this time around. Why didn’t I know the price of the hat and shirt etc. in advance of registering? Why do I still not know if that showing of Joe will be in imax or not? Why was i given a time limit for registering, but then told to read everything carefully. I refuse to believe anyone read all of their terms of service, it seemed deceptive.

If your heading to Indy, I’ll see you there.

G.I.Joe club exclusive 12″ figures are up.

gi-joe-the-rise-of-cobra-logoG.I.Joe 12″ exclusives for the upcoming G.I.Joe convention are up, head to their site to check it out!  I may not be a 12″ collector, but you have to respect your roots.  The set this year features a James Bond style mission into an island and both Joe himself and a villain.  To chat about the con or 12″ joes hit up our G.I.Joe Forum.

FSS Jinx review

There is a ton of Joe News out there right now, and a lot to be excited about. Even though I didn’t get the club’s FSS, i did have the chance to get the JINX figure that put as a single on their website. I’ve been slow to get the review up, but finally i’m able to present her. Similar to her VVV figure, this Jinx isn’t just a red ninja in pajamas, she is a battle ready Arashakage Ninja Assassin.

The Joe Report’s Poll on the G.I.Joe club magazine (and thoughts)

08_CobraCommanderThe excellent The Joe Report site, has posted a poll about what club members would like to see in their club magazines. Some of the choices included more 12″ content, more 3 3/4″ content or doing away with letters and shifting their cost elsewhere. Personally i voted to tend the letters and take it off of membership dues. The content could become available on the web, and if they fear piracy an App could be an option as well, although that might alienate those without smart phones. Make your voice heard, go vote, and check out the site while your there! (Credit to me knowing about the site, or the poll, goes to Whats on Joe Mind PodCast.)

To talk about all things Joe hit up our Forums.
